All levels of painters with life drawing experience

Michael O'Keefe

July 26th- July 27th, 2019

In this 2 day workshop, each participant will work with artist Michael O’Keefe on a life size head, made in clay from observation.  O’Keefe, an artist whose figurative work spans a wide range of abstraction, believes working from the model is the best way to develop an understanding of the fundamentals of figurative sculpture.  O’Keefe has logged hundreds of hours working this way in his formative years and many years teaching this process to students of all levels. O’Keefe will help participants develop strategies for looking, making meaningful observations from the model and translating those observations to the language of sculpture. Participants will consider the anatomy of the head, strategies for modeling in clay, as well as fundamentals of form building and form integration.  This workshop is appropriate for sculptors of all levels and backgrounds, as well as those that have never worked in sculpture before.

Michael O’Keefe lives and works as an artist in Dallas, Texas, working in the fields of sculpture, drawing and painting.   O’Keefe exhibits his work regularly in north Texas.  He is represented by Valley House Gallery and Sculpture Garden in Dallas and On Center Gallery in Provincetown, MA.  O’Keefe has exhibited his work throughout Texas, as well as Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and New York, and has work in many private and public collections.

O’Keefe received a Bachelor degree in Art and Art History from Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA after studying at the Maryland Institute College of Art and the International School of Art in Umbria, Italy.  Following his undergraduate education O’Keefe continued his art education at The New York Studio School.  O’Keefe received an MFA from Southern Methodist University.

O’Keefe has taught drawing and sculpture as an adjunct professor at Southern Methodist University, Brookhaven College, Eastfield College, and Collin College.  Currently, he teaches and lectures at The O’Keefe Studio Center, an independent teaching studio in Richardson, TX, founded by O’Keefe in 2013.
